I'm Pregnant, Not Sick!

Okay, let me start by telling the world that pregnancy is a natural and healthy condition. It is NOT a disease. I say this because people have been treating me as if I'm on my last breath and should be home away from the public eye. Here are some of the recent comments:

A conversation I recently had with a student who just moved from a different country:
"Teacher, how old are you?"
"I'm 35!"
"35 and pregnant? Ohhh, very old"

Different student:
"Why are you wearing heels? Pregnant women can't wear heels"

Different Student:
"You look so big. You should be home. My sister is only 2 months pregnant and she's home."

Comedian at a night club:
"You're pregnant? What are you doing out at night?"

Cute guy at a Carnaval party:
"Wanna dance?" asked the enthusiastic dancer followed by "Wow, wow, wow! I'll be back."

The above are my favorite comments but I have heard more. Thus, to combat the comments, I started pushing buttons. This weekend my heels got higher, I stayed way past my bed time, and I did it all in style. Best of all, I now have a new attitude to match my behavior--Yes, I'm 35, in heels, big, and at a club! What?

Camila's Tree--A Project for a 2-Year Old

At some point in my childhood, my brother and I couldn't watch television until a certain time. Consequently, my brother and I would sit around the house waiting for TV time. Since my husband had a similar experience, we decided that for Camila there is no TV during the week (we need to give her some reason to see a therapist later in life!). The rational behind our evil ways is that we hope our daughter, as she gets older, will learn to find fun and alternative forms of entertainment, like crafts, books, or sports. The challenge, though, is that we, as parents, need to help her find things to do. Since she is only 2, it is a challenge at times. But have no fear, grandma came up with a great idea. Camila's own Christmas tree.

This weekend, Camila and I decorated her own Christmas tree with handmade ornaments. It began with salt-starch ornaments (recipe from Paint Cut Paste) I made after decorating our tree. Later in the week, Camila, her cousin, and I used paint, glue, and glitter to decorate the ornaments. I then added pipe cleaners to the ornaments; this made it easier for Camila to hang. On a different day, I spray painted a tree branch from my father's backyard, which would later serve as the tree. Finally, Camila and I decorated the tree. This was a fun and easy project that I broke down over 2 weeks. Best of all, it was a great project to do on a cold Sunday afternoon.

Recipe for the salt-starch ornaments: You can find the recipe on the Paint Cut Paste blog

* Bring 1 cup of water to (barely) a boil

* Add 1 cup of salt, stir and dissolve for about a minute (not all of the salt dissolves).

* Pour salt and water over 1 cup of cornstarch and mix together

* Add 1/4 cup of cold water

* Add 2 tbsp oil (I used canola. you might want to go with 1.5 tbsp instead, in hindsight)

* Role it out to a 1/4 inch

* Cut into desired shape and back at 245 for 2 hours.

Growth Chart

Maybe it's because I'm pregnant, but now I'm really into my family and home. Friends call it nesting (their comment must have something to do with all the feathers I use for Carnaval). Regardless, this mama bird is happy doing home stuff!

For over a year, I've wanted a growth chart in Camila's room. Initially, I wanted a large tree that would cover 1/4 of her side wall and from the branches I would hang photos. After framing one of Mara Galvao's pieces from her kid's collection, the idea went out the door. The tree and the large artwork would be overwhelming in the room.
However, I was determined to have a growth chart! For this, I turned to my very artistic side. Note that like my father, I can't draw if my life depended on it. My circle usually looks like a lopsided oval. Thus, to inspire my Picasso side, I surfed images on Google and found a few drawing I liked. From there, I drew the image on paper before trying it out on the wall. Once satisfied, I used a pencil to trace a flower on the wall and used sample paint I purchased at a hardware store.
The next day, I added the chart numbers in yellow and outlined the petals, stem, and leaves in black.
Camila, Freddy, and I love the final product and we are pleased that unlike Picasso my flower does not have any additional parts :)

Camila's Hair

Growing up, I was not a girly girl. I played ball, cops and robbers, tag, and hide-n-seek. I wanted to be outside searching, climbing, and running. Thus, it's a huge surprise to me that my 2 year old daughter is a girly girl. She wakes up asking for her lip gloss, walks around the house with my heels, and goes to sleep with her princess brush; all things that I Purchased for her (yes, I created a monster).

Needless to say, Camila, the princess, is in the long hair phase. To make things difficult, she has beautiful brown curly hair (FYI: Disney has not gotten around to creating a curly hair princess) and loads of it--really, she has A LOT of hair. With her ringlets, we have tried numerous products to curb the frizz and tangles but little has helped until recently. We now shampoo her hair once or twice a week but we condition it daily with mommy's conditioner. The new strategy has really worked!

Christmas Cheer

I really don't like the cold, but I love the holiday season. Houses are decorated, streets have a myriad of lights, and people are in a happy and friendly mood.

Two weekends ago, the family and I went out for a little Christmas cheer and inspirations. Of course, we had to see the San Francisco Macy's Christmas tree.

The following weekend, inspiration kicked in and we began decorating the tree! I admit, this was the best tree-decorating session. My 2 1/2 year old daughter really got into it by singing, hanging ornaments, and giving us loads of kisses. Again, I love the holiday season.

The next day, while reading a few of my favorite blogs, I came across a great project from Paint Cut Paste --salt and starch ornaments. I cut the recipe in half (in retrospect, I wish I hadn't) and baked it for 2 hours. Now, I can't wait to decorated it with my little girl!

On Board with Baby

The first ultrasound

Freddy and I are expecting our second child and I am now past the half way mark! While I would normally say that now there is no turning back, I think i have past that point a while ago :)

When pregnant with my daughter, I did not enjoy the pregnancy all that much. In many ways I had a difficult time accepting the changes that were happening. I did not like the fact that I was so tired, the disrupted sleep, And frequent trips to the restroom. But this pregnancy is different! I have found a remedy for all the issues that previously bothered me. I just go with the flow. If I feel tired, I take a nap; if I wake up at night, I change positions and am back to sleep; if I need a restroom, I go to one. These are simple and easy remedies that have made my pregnancy more enjoyable and positive.

Hold on, I did not stop there. In addition to accepting the changes that I'm going through, I have also decided to look cute while doing this preg thing. Check out my new haircut :)

Before the haircut. My hair was long and all one layer.
After the haircut. It doesn't seem like a big change, but it's inches shorter and it is now full of layers...I love it!

Bay Area Dance Clases

Yes, I love to dance, so there is nothing better than a great dance class. Below is a list of local dance classes that have caught my attention:

Maria Souza's samba class

This is THE samba class to attend if you want to learn samba. Maria breaks down the samba steps and works with student's individually. She also has a great and positive energy that is contagious.

Her class is every Monday from 7:30-9 at Burk Hall in Berkeley. For questions call her at 510-548-1310.

Silvana Sousa

An accomplished samba dancer, Sivana Sousa teaches a high energy samba class once a week. She successfully fuses traditional samba moves with aerobic and Brazilian pop. With her edgy and high energy personality, Silvana will motivate, push, and make sure you getting a great workout!

Her class is on Wednesday from 6:30-8 at Mission Dance Theater in San Francisco.

Raffaela Falchi

This is a great class for beginners. during the first half of class, Raffaella focuses on samba moves and basic steps. Then the fun begins. During the second half, Raffaella has live music to accompany a detailed choreography that mixes samba, Axe, and samba reggae.

Her class is on Friday from 6-7:15 at ODC Dance School in San Francisco.

Rodison de Jesus

One of the few male samba teachers in the Bay Area, Rodison de Jesus is an amazing teacher. A former Ballet de Folklorico dancer, Rodison is a natural dancer and a great teacher. He carefully breaks down the steps, demonstrates the final product, and gives students time to practice and improve the steps. His friendly personality, great energy, and amazing looks makes the aches and pains from a great workout worth it!

His class is every Monday from 7-8:30 at the San Francisco Gold's Gym.

Maisa Duke

Though I have never taken her class (conflicts with schedules), Maisa an I have performed together various times. Without a doubt, she is an amazing dancer, so I can only assume that she is an amazing samba teacher.

Her class is every Monday from 6:30-7:45 at Studio Gracia in San Francisco.

Dudley Flores

Okay, he is not a samba teacher but I really enjoy his class. In his Fusion and Motion class, you will work muscles you didn't know you had. But best of all, you do it all with a smile on your face. The class is fun and Dudley does a great job of breaking down the moves.

His class is every Sunday from 10-11 am at ODC in San Francisco.

With the above classes, a great workout can also be fun. Enjoy!
